White PapersHow to Install CaseFinder on a File Server of a Windows NT 4.0 Network from a Workstation Assumptions: CaseFinder has not been installed either on the workstation or on the file server
Procedure:   1. From the workstation, access a directory on the file server that is read/write accessible by the workstation (and it should be read/write accessible by all the workstations that are to run CaseFinder). Create a "Casefinder" folder in that directory (you can use a different name, but "Casefinder" is the name our tech support people will look for if there is ever any problem). We will call this the application folder in these instructions. Suggestions: A. Hopefully, your file server was set up so that the operating system and other important files that should be inaccessible to the typical network user are located on the file server's drive c:, which is accessible only by the network administrator, with other drives that are accessible to the network users. In such case, of course, put the application folder on some drive other than the file server's c: drive. B. When you log on to the work station to do the install, log on as a typical CaseFinder user. CaseFinder users must have read/write access to the application folder. If you log on as administrator, you'll probably have full rights on all the drives on the server, and wouldn't notice if the typical CaseFinder user doesn't have read/write access to the application folder.   2. Put CaseFinder Disc One in the CD drive of the workstation. It should autorun to an InstallShield&trade wizard and from there to a welcome screen. If not, use Start > Run and type in the local CD drive letter followed by ":\setup"   3. Click Yes or Next until you get to the Choose Destination Location screen. The installer will suggest "c:\program files\Casefinder" as the application folder, but it's referring to the local c: drive, and you don't want that. So . . . click Browse and navigate to the application folder on the file server that you created in step one when it shows up in the "path" box, click OK and you will return to the Choose Destination Location screen. Click Next.   4. You will be asked if you wish to transfer some or all of the CaseFinder databases from the CD to the hard drive. We recommend that you transfer all of the databases to the hard drive. Click Yes and then click in each little check box to select the databases you want to transfer. A subdirectory will be created by the installer for each of the databases and the database files will be transferred into those subdirectories at a later point in the program. By default, the subdirectories will be located under the application folder. However, you can use the Browse button to choose a different parent directory for the database folders if you wish. Click Next when you're done. Suggestion: If you don't have enough hard drive space on the server to hold all of the databases, at least transfer all the databases from one of the two discs to the hard drive, and then put the other CD disc in the server's CD drive. The text files in the databases are extensively hyperlinked to each other. If all the databases from both CDs aren't available someplace on the server, you'll have to swap CD discs in the file server's CD drive in order for the users to be able to reach some of the hyperlinks.   5. A screen will suggest a Program Folder to hold the CaseFinder icons click Next.   6. You will be asked if you want to create a shortcut on the desktop answer No, because you will be installing a workstation version of CaseFinder to this workstation later on, and you will create the shortcut at that time.   7. The installer will proceed to copy files, displaying a progress bar. It will prompt you when it needs CaseFinder Disc Two.   8. After the installer has copied all the database files, a screen will appear where you can choose to run CaseFinder or view the Readme file decline and click Finish. The blue screen will linger while the installer finishes up.   9. Go into Explorer, go to the CaseFinder application folder on the server, locate the \Wksetup subdirectory and double-click on setup.exe in that subdirectory.   10. The program will proceed to install a workstation version CaseFinder on the workstation choose Yes, Next or Finish at all screens and don't select or change anything.   11. The workstation setup will return you to the Explorer. Navigate to the CaseFinder application directory and double-click to open the paths.txt file. It will contain the drive letter of the CD drive on the workstation. On a separate line beneath that, type in the path to the application folder (either a mapped drive letter and path or a UNC path). If you selected something other than the suggested location for the database files, on another line, type in the path to the parent folder of those database folders. Save the file.   12. Double-click on the CaseFinder shortcut on the workstation. The databases that are available on the server should show up in full color databases that aren't available are "ghosted." The book icon for the Virginia Supreme Court database should appear open if not, double-click on it (or on another case-type database) and wait for it to open. Type "aviation" into the search request box at the top and click Start Search. A list of cases should come up, double-click on one of them and you should get the text of the case.   13. From each of the other workstations, navigate to the \Wksetup folder under the application folder on the server and double-click setup.exe. Check to make sure they work, too. Note: Unless you've installed concurrent user permits, only one workstation at a time will be able to run CaseFinder. Note: If you've got a really big network, the installation on the workstations can be handled through logon scripts call us about that. Note: Even if you transferred all of the databases to the hard drive(s) on the file server, if no concurrent use permits are installed, the CaseFinder CD disc must still be in an accessible CD drive for the program to run. In this case, you should remove the CaseFinder CD from the CD drive in the workstation and place it in the CD drive on the file server. You will also need to edit the paths.txt file accordingly. Go to the application folder, open up the paths.txt file and delete the drive letter of the CD drive in the workstation from which the installation was performed. Add the drive letter or UNC path to the CD drive on the file server as it is seen by the workstations on the network. Save the file.   14. If you're a subscriber, a new pair of disks will show up about the 20th of each month. Each pair of disks completely replaces the prior month's disks. <=-Back |
