How to Install CaseFinder on the Server of a Windows NT 4.0 Network from the Console

Assumptions:

CaseFinder has not been installed on the file server
There is a CD drive on the file server that is accessible from the workstations
There is a directory on the file server that is read/write accessible from the workstations

Procedure:

  1. Log on to the file server. Verify that there is a directory on the file server that is read/write accessible by all the workstations that are to run CaseFinder. Create a "Casefinder" folder in that directory. We will call this the application folder in these instructions. You can use a different name for the application folder, but if someone other than you calls for tech support, will they know the name of the application folder?

Suggestions:

A. Hopefully, your file server was set up so that the operating system files (and other important files) are located on the file server's drive c:, which is accessible only by the network administrator. Other drives on the server should be accessible to some or all of the network users. Put the application folder on one of these other drives.

B. Log on to one of the workstations as a typical CaseFinder user, access the application folder and verify that the user has read/write access.

  2. Put CaseFinder Disc One in the CD drive of the server. It should autorun to an InstallShield&trade wizard and from there to a welcome screen. If not, use Start > Run, type in the CD drive letter followed by ":\setup" and click OK.

  3. Click Yes or Next until you get to the Choose Destination Location screen. The installer will suggest "c:\program files\Casefinder" as the application folder. You probably don't want to install CaseFinder there. Click Browse and navigate to the application folder that you created in step one when it shows up in the "path" box, click OK and you will return to the Choose Destination Location screen. Click Next.

  4. You will be asked if you wish to transfer some or all of the CaseFinder databases from the CD to the hard drive. We recommend that you transfer all of the databases to the hard drive. Click Yes and then click in each little check box to select the databases you want to transfer. As you click in each little check box, the total number of bytes to transfer, along with the total free space on the specified drive will be shown.

A folder will be created by the installer for each of the databases and the database files will be transferred into those folders at a later point in the program. By default, the database folders will be located under the application folder. However, you can use the Browse button to choose a different parent directory for the database folders if you wish. Click Next when you're done.

Suggestion: Even if you don't have enough hard drive space to hold all of the databases from both CDs, at least transfer all the databases from one of the CDs to the hard drive and put the other CD disc in the server's CD drive. (The text files in the databases are extensively hyperlinked. If no databases are transferred to the hard drive, if the user hyperlinks to a file on the other Disc, the discs have to be swapped in the server's CD drive (which can be a real problem). But if the files from the other CD are on the hard drive, swapping is unecessary.

  5. A screen will suggest a Program Folder to hold the CaseFinder icons click Next.

  6. You will be asked if you want to create a shortcut on the desktop answer No (you won't be running CaseFinder from the file server you will be installing the workstation version of CaseFinder to each of the workstations later on, and you will create a shortcut on each workstation).

  7. The installer will proceed to copy files, displaying a progress bar. It will prompt you when it needs CaseFinder Disc Two.

  8. After the installer has copied all the database files, a screen will appear where you can choose to run CaseFinder or view the Readme file decline and click Finish. The blue screen will linger while the installer finishes up.

  9. From one of the workstations, go into Explorer, go to the application folder on the server, locate the \Wksetup folder and double-click on setup.exe in that folder.

  10. The \Wksetup\setup.exe program will install a workstation version CaseFinder on the workstation choose Yes, Next or Finish at all screens and don't select or change anything.

  11. The workstation setup will return you to the Explorer. Navigate to the CaseFinder application folder on the server and double-click to open the paths.txt file. It will contain the drive letter of the file server's CD drive and the path to the application folder. If you transferrred databases to the hard drive, it will also show that path. Edit all of these paths as necessary so that they reflect the locations as seen by the workstations (either mapped drive letters or UNC paths). Save the paths.txt file.

  12. Double-click on the CaseFinder shortcut on the workstation. The databases that are available on the server should show up in full color databases that aren't available are "ghosted." The book icon for the Virginia Supreme Court database should appear open if not, double-click on it (or on another case-type database) and wait for it to open. Type "aviation" into the search request box at the top and click Start Search. A list of cases should come up, double-click on one of them and you should get the text of the case.

  13. From each of the other workstations, navigate to the \Wksetup folder under the application folder on the server and double-click setup.exe. Check to make sure they work, too.

Note: Unless you've installed concurrent user permits, only one workstation at a time will be able to run CaseFinder.

Note: If you've got a really big network, the installation on the workstations can be handled through logon scripts call us about that.
